Egg Freezing

Egg freezing (vitrification) is a new technology.

It is allowing women to potentially preserve their fertility.

There are two categories of egg freezing:

  • Medical– example: when a women needs chemotherapy to treat breast cancer, she may become infertile. The chemotherapy can destroy egg reserve. To preserve eggs, ovarian stimulation is performed to retrieve her eggs before the chemotherapy (link to IVF).
  • Social– female fertility declines after the age of 35 yrs. Many women do not find a suitable partner until after this age which makes it harder to conceive. Women are becoming more aware of this and are becoming proactive by freezing their eggs before this age. Egg freezing does not guarantee a baby.
